Frequently Asked Questions

Your Top 10 Questions About Going to the Dentist—Answered!

How much is my first visit going to cost me?

Once you see your dentist and have a treatment plan, the office manager will provide you with detailed information about costs, financing alternatives, and insurance.  As always, we do our best to find a price and a payment option that’s best for you.

We pledge never to surprise you with hidden fees—we’ll provide a clear, detailed estimate on the cost of your treatment plan in writing so you know what to expect.

Discounts such as the free ($79) new patient appointment cannot be combined with insurance. But we’ll do everything we can to find a plan that gives you a healthy mouth.

What can I expect during a dental checkup?

The dentist or hygienist will ask about your recent medical history, examine your mouth and decide whether or not you need x-rays. Depending on your treatment plan, the dentist may use a special dental instruments to check your gums for gum disease. Your dentist will evaluate your overall dental health and conduct an oral cancer screening by holding your tongue with gauze, checking it and your whole mouth, then feeling your jaw and neck.

How often do I have to go to the dentist?

Once every 6 months is good for most people, but some people with special conditions may need to see their dentist more often. Schedule an appointment to find out what’s best for you.

Do you treat children?

Yes. Lake Eola Dental welcomes young patients from the age of three and up. It’s important to start caring for your oral health early! All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during an office visit.

Do you accept Medicaid/Medicare, etc.?

Lake Eola Dental offices do not work with these programs. They do, however, accept most other insurance plans, and offer a range of flexible, affordable payment plans.

What causes a tooth cavity?

Decay is caused by bacteria that collect on teeth and feed on the carbohydrates in our diet. The bacteria produce acid that wears away at the enamel on our teeth. If decay is left untreated, it can cause pain, infection and even tooth loss. Protect your teeth against decay by brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily, visiting your dentist regularly, and avoiding sugary foods.

What are the most common oral health problems?

Cavities and gum disease are the most common problems. Both can be prevented with regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.

How often should I change my toothbrush?

Every 3 months or sooner if the bristles become worn and frayed. If you’ve been sick with a cold or other bacterial infection, it’s wise to replace your toothbrush once you’re better.

What x-rays are usually taken?

Depending on your dental history, your dentist may recommend the taking of a series of digital images or X-rays to get a better look at your entire mouth. X-rays allow your dentist to see things that can’t be seen by the naked eye, and they help your dentist conduct a comprehensive exam.

X-rays may also be required for denture wearers. Your dentist can determine if you have adequate bone to support dentures, plus check for bone fractures, cysts, tumors, lesions, and sinus issues.

What is dry mouth and what can I do about it?

Dry mouth is caused by a reduced flow of saliva. Saliva is needed to help control bacteria and wash away food debris. Certain medications, some diseases, smoking and chewing tobacco can cause dry mouth. If you suffer from dry mouth, call us and we can recommend ways to treat it.
